PARENTING MAGAZINE’S FIT GENERATION RUN/WALK + FAMILY FESTIVAL:

Join the Movement to Put Your Family on a Healthier Path

Winter Park, Fla. — In an effort to help combat the rise of childhood obesity in the United States, Parenting magazine has issued a challenge to families to move more and eat better – together.  With one in three kids ages 2 to 19 considered overweight or obese, the magazine launched its three-part “Fit Generation” series in 2010, an editorial platform designed to arm families with the information and resources to accomplish that goal.  The program will be brought to life later this year with the Parenting Fit Generation Run/Walk + Family Festival multi-market event series.

With the help of NBA/WNBA FIT — the league’s comprehensive program that encourages physical activity and healthy living for children and families, Parenting’s Fit Generation Run/Walk + Family Festival event series will visit three U.S. cities in 2011, including Denver, Colo., on June 18; Minneapolis, Minn., on July 30; and the greater Orlando area of Winter Park, Fla., on Oct. 1.

“The Fit Generation event series brings to life Parenting’s goal of helping families get on a healthier path by giving them the opportunity to participate in fun fitness activities and learn about smart lifestyle habits, together,” said Ana Connery, Parenting’s director, print content, strategy, and design. “The event combines exercise, wellness education, and entertainment in a festival environment the entire family will enjoy, and gives Parenting the chance to address the childhood obesity crisis both in person and in our pages.”

The Festival’s signature running events include a timed 5K race for serious runners, an untimed 5K Stroller Roll for runners with babies, a Kids’ Fun Run, and a Diaper Dash for toddlers. All Kids’ Fun Run and Diaper Dash participants will receive a first-place ribbon, while the top-finishing runners in the timed 5K will receive a one-of-a-kind Etch A Sketch-style trophy.

Following the racing events, families can cool off and enjoy a complimentary food buffet, music, children’s entertainment, health and wellness exhibits, games, raffles, giveaways, awards and more. Appearances by NBA legends and current and former WNBA players, as well as NBA/WNBA FIT prizes and giveaways, are scheduled throughout the Fit Generation event series.

The inaugural Parenting Fit Generation Run/Walk + Family Festival was held in September 2010 in Winter Park, FL. The Festival received such a positive response from participants that Parenting decided to expand into a multi-market event series by adding the two additional markets, Denver and Minneapolis, to the 2011 campaign.
